    Jalapenos and Hass avocados from a Texas supplier are being recalled in North Carolina after state officials there found salmonella in two samples. The investigation is ongoing, but initial tests indicate the salmonella found there is not the rare Saintpaul strain that has sickened more than 1,200 people nationwide, including 23 in North Carolina, officials said.

  • BK buys 72 stores from 32-year franchisee
    Burger King Corp. said it has purchased 72 units in Iowa and Nebraska that were operated by Simmonds Restaurant Management, a franchisee of the concept since 1976. Terms were not disclosed.

    Cosi Inc. reported on Thursday that systemwide same-store sales grew 2.2 percent in the second quarter ended June 30 as sales improved at both company and franchised stores.

    A McDonald's franchisee on Wednesday was fined $1 million after pleading guilty in federal court here to charges of supplying fake names and Social Security numbers to illegal immigrant workers at its 11 restaurants.

  • Landry’s urges shareholders to take Fertitta’s $1.3B offer
    The board of Landry’s Restaurants Inc. is advising shareholders to vote in favor of the $21-a-share buyout offer that was tendered last month by chairman, chief executive and president Tilman J. Fertitta. The recommendation, which was included in a proxy statement filed Thursday, stresses that Fertitta had no part in the deliberations.

  • Starbucks releases full list of store closures
    Starbucks Corp. on Thursday posted the full list of about 600 company-operated stores in 45 states scheduled to close beginning this month through next March.
